is that the longline idea is a bad one - which is pretty much the conclusion i'd come to thinking about the tangles one could get into, let alone rearing possibilities!
friend's coming up on saturday so we'll have a conference...
the other option, of course, is doncaster sales.....and invest proceeds in an ottb....or see if someone has something available on long term loan....
don't think i'm wholly prepared to give up just yet....despite my frustrations!

ottb - off track thoroughbred???? Don't go there! If you think Molly is difficult you should try half the racehorses that come out of training! A very small percentage are perfect straight away. Most of them take months of reschooling before they would stop scaring the pants off a normal rider. Some (not a small percentage, quite significant) are off their rockers and need a really confident rider to get anywhere at all with them. You'd be taking a huge risk.

Out of the ex racers I have bought from Doncaster two were perfect immediately but one of those couldn't breathe. Three were great after retraining but one of those had navicular. Two were difficult to retrain but fine after a year but one of those was unshoeable and difficult to handle. One was very difficult even after a year and broke the leg of the girl who bought her from me. And one was fine until I sold him when his new owner had him shot before six months were out because he was dangerous to handle.

that's interesting you should say that Caroline. There's an OTTB on the yard that i've known for about 5 years now, Gaynor's Charlie, he's good as gold; there was Jimmy's horse Tilly, also good as gold (died in the field last year, probably a brain haemorrhage) and Natasha's had a couple of good un's. I would, I expect, be assisted by the fact that Natasha's fiancé is the local racehorse vet.....
and re the steps - ok with your horses which were used to it, but I generally worry about those sorts of steps at the best of times!
Did they all come from Doncaster Claire, or had they been privately homed first? If they all came from Doncaster then my experience would be that four out of four would be very lucky. As you say, it helps if the vet's got inside knowledge. How much is that worth, eh, a Superhubby who's a vet :-)))

i think, caroline, TBF, some of them were privately owned before they hit the sale ring. They have one fantastic warmblood (clealry not an OTTB!) that is very well bred that they got for a bargain as the owner was forced to sell due to personal circumstances and hadn't entered it properly... but they do have some ex racehorses as well!
anyway we'll be conferring about all that on saturday.
