she did not like the pelham.
got it on, sorted the curb out, jackie who uses one was there and checked it that was fine. tacked up, spent ages failing to get her to stand still and eventualy gaynor turned up and held her.
move? no.
windmill head? yes
buck? yes tried from standstill.
bit ring in mouth? yes (the lower one, for the curb rein).
pah.
wasn't prepared to really get after her. i was, after all, trying to also get used to two reins. didn't have any pressure on the curb rein at all, except accidentally when she was windmilling.

Ok, no great loss. You still have options. The problem is, bits do cost money.
If she always puts the ring in her mouth, a full cheek snaffle is the choice there. I use that on babies because it really does help with the turning.
A baucher bit gives you a little poll pressure but still acts like a snaffle.
I do love the lozenge bits by KK and there are less expensive versions available. My Thoroughbreds do prefer them. There's a brand called JP that offers all kinds of oval mouth and full cheek bits at a good price. The mouthpiece is curved to help keep the bits from "nutcrackering" or hitting the roof of the mouth.
I also have a Sprenger correction bit--solid mouthpiece if you want to try that.
Just what it the problem you are trying to solve? Control, comfort?
I am pretty sure Tucker would shut down in a pelham too, so it is not an uncommon response. Molly may actually be happier with less bit rather than more.
essentially, i want to find a bit she is happy in, that she'll relax in, that she won't fight all the time, and that she won't/can't pull through her mouth....
she's been hard to bit since she was first bitted .. have that on very good authority! people who knew her then... and is no good in the bog standard jointed. small mouth, large tongue, doesn't like it, was dangerous before we had 6 months bitless...(hence the blog title.....)
the myler wasn't a huge success - but i suppose i could trade it in and try a myler mullen, they do one now.
someone has suggested a kimblewick, but i'm not sure the port would be a good idea .. if she don't like joint, would she like port?
i could put rubber rings on the bit to stop it pulling through...pain in the whotsit to get on, though, i used to find you'd end up with the rubber rings inthe middle of the bit instead of at the edges.....
never seen a fulmer with a mullen mouth...
I went for the pelham having read heather's book and thinking the idea was good ..
I don't think she would get a baucher through her mouth.
H-m-m-m. Mullen mouth fulmer....gotta look around.
Have you tried a French link or lozenge bit?
My guys have always gone better in a fixed ring snaffle--eggbutt because the bit is much quieter in the mouth. The lozenge seems to be more comfy as well because you don't get the pinch, or the link in the bit jamming the roof of the mouth.
Do the Myler people have consultants? I seem to remember there was a way to contact them to discuss bitting problems and they would design the bit for you. Was that just something I heard about here in the US, or was it a company policy?
I have several bits here, but shipping them for you to try would be quite a complex process. Anyone around the stable with some you could try?
The port in a bit does give tongue room. Molly would let you know pretty fast if she liked it or not.
Let me think on this. I have a bitting book somewhere. I'll also browse a few sites to see what's out there.
jean, you're ok, I googled around later on last night and can get either a mullen mouth filis, a mullen mouth fulmer (I seem to recall with one of those flexible plastic bits though) and yes there are myler consultants about ...
course the other trouble is, small mouth .... not many carry 4 1/2" so I think i'd be getting whatever online ...
TBH I hadn't actually thought about a french link, and I don't know why, I had one for Queenie (too big for Molly). I could open a bit shop, as could the rest of us no doubt....
I was thinking about putting my Myler back in today, to see what happens. It may be that one key to Molly is a regular change...
